Well would you belive it…we finally all went to the cinema last week to see a film, you know, a new release at the local theatre…who’d have thought it eh?
Do you know what else?? We actually saw a good film…unlike most of the years films to date, this one was pretty good!! But then again, it is a cartoon, so what do you expect!! Surely all cartoons are good aren’t they?? Well, actually no…anyone remember Open Season??
The film in question was the latest offering from the Dreamworks Animation team – you know the ones that brought us Shrek etc…Not only did we see the film, we also saw the future….coz we saw Monsters Vs Aliens in 3D……I know!!
Boy, was it good, really good, I must admit I was a little weary of the whole 3D thing, especially as it was an extra £2.20 to view it in future vision, but it was worth it!! Of course, we had to sit their like idiots in 3d glasses…but gone are the days of one red & one green lense, these just seemed like normal glasses!! Anyway, as soon as the trailers started we all donned our future spectacles & waited to be zoomed into the, well, Future!! To begin with, it did seem a little weird wearing glasses in the cinema, now that may be coz I’m a non glasses wearer, so I did take them off a few times during the trailers & opening credits. All that seemed to do, was remind me how normal the screen looked without the glasses on….Yes, there were the usual things you expect from 3D effects, like large fingers pointing at you from the screen, but there was more than that!! You see, once the film started, it was immediate to see that everyone/thing on the screen seemed more real (well as real as it can be for a cartoon). The people in the church, seemed to be actually lining up in the pews rather than just standing in them, things in the foreground…were literally coming off the screen…it was fantastic!!
The film itself, was also great…a perfect mix of story, humour & adult aimed ‘in’ jokes….With an all star cast of Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogan, Keifer Sutherland & Hugh Laurie to name a few providing the voices, it really was quite a laugh!! The basic plotline, involves lead character Susan being hit by a metorite, turning into a giant & then being banished away onto a space station with all the other ‘monsters’ captured on Earth….Following an attack by ‘Aliens’, it is down to the ‘Monsters’ to save Earth….I wont spoil it anymore as I really suggest you go and see the film!!
However, having seen the film, it did throw up two obvious questions, that both myself & Chris thought of….
1) Why dont they make every film in 3D? Especially as the costs to do so have reduced due to new ways of producing the 3D effect…
2) Why are these new ‘cartoons’ making the female lead characters sooo hot?? I know it sounds wrong, but trust me, Susan in this film, looks mighty fine!! Whether it be in her short cut wedding dress, Monster jump suit or her Alien busting skin tight lycra costume….she looks hot!! In fact, these ‘cartoons’ are looking so life-like, you could end up getting very confused!!
Which actually, leads me on to a little survey….Who is the ‘hottest’ cartoon character?
Maybe, it is Ginormica? Or is it Elastigirl from the Incredibles? , maybe oldies favourite Betty Boo?, How about Betty Rubble from the Flinstones or Daphane from Scooby Doo? Of course, not forgetting the one & only Jessica Rabbit? Finally…not exactly a cartoon character but animated all the same…Lara Croft??
I know..all a bit weird eh, but let me know your thoughts & suggestions on any more!!
Finally, I must repeat myself & say that you really must go and see this film, but then again, if you’re reading this, you probably already have as you came with me!! Oh well…..My score out of ten would be an excellent 9, with at least 2 points just for the 3D aspect!! Roll on more 3D films….epecially now I’ve got my glasses!!
